Checked before it is drawn

  • Courses reach the height, with a buried course of at least a tenth of it
  • Every course long enough, half blocks counted on the offset courses
  • A drain behind every wall 2 ft or taller
  • No wall over 3 ft: taller walls need an engineered design

Before you dig

Call 811 a few days ahead and the utilities come out and mark their lines for free. Check your town for permit rules on walls and for setbacks from the property line. Walls that hold back a driveway, a slope above them or more than 3 ft of soil need an engineer.
